You can create a Telegram poll directly in a group or channel without a bot. You write a question and answer options, people choose their answers, and Telegram counts the votes. This works for decisions such as picking a meeting time or a topic for your next article.

We will create a poll with one answer per person in a channel called “My notes.” The process is the same in a group, with an additional setting that lets you show who voted for each option.

The steps in this article use Telegram Web. The process is similar in the Telegram apps for desktop, iOS and Android.

## Before you create a poll

In a channel, you need permission to publish messages. In a group, sending polls must be allowed by the group’s permissions. This method does not work in a regular one-to-one chat.

Prepare one clear question and at least two answer options. The form allows up to 12 options. For our example, we will use “Channel settings,” “Working with bots” and “Useful features.”

Tip

Match the question to the decision you need to make. “Which topic should we cover first?” calls for one answer. “Which topics interest you?” works better as a multiple-answer poll, where people can select everything that applies.

## Create a poll in a group or channel

**1\.** Open the group or channel where you want to post the poll. Select the paperclip next to the message field.

Open the attachment menu in the intended group or channel.

**2\.** Choose **Poll** from the menu. The **New Poll** form will open.

Select Poll to create a built-in vote.

**3\.** Fill in **Ask a Question** and add your answers under **Poll options**. Another answer field appears as you fill in the options. The optional description can clarify the question, for example by specifying the time zone when choosing a meeting time.

Give each answer its own line.

**4\.** Scroll down to **Settings** and choose how voting should work. For this example, keep **Allow Multiple Answers**, **Shuffle Options** and **Set Correct Answer** off. You can leave **Allow Revoting** on so people can change their minds.

Channel polls are anonymous. You do not need to enable the additional restrictions for a basic poll.

Each person can choose one answer and change their choice later.

**5\.** Check your question, answers and settings.

Important

You cannot change the question with the usual message editing command after sending it. Check the wording before selecting Create: if you spot a mistake later, you will need a new poll.

Select **Create** at the top of the form. The poll will immediately appear in the open group or channel.

Check both the wording and voting rules before selecting Create.

**6\.** Check that the message contains your question and every answer option. The poll type appears below the question, such as **Anonymous Poll**. In a poll that allows one answer, a participant votes by selecting an option.

The completed poll appears as a separate message.

## Anonymous voting and other poll settings

An anonymous poll hides each person’s choice but shows the overall results. Built-in channel polls are always anonymous. In a group, voter visibility depends on the Show Who Voted setting. An anonymous poll can also allow multiple answers: these settings are independent.

| Setting | What it changes | When it helps |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Show Who Voted | People in a group can see who chose each option. | You need to know who plans to attend a meeting. |
| Allow Multiple Answers | Each person can select more than one option. | You want every suitable date or topic of interest. |
| Allow Revoting | Participants can change their answers. | Plans may change before voting ends. |
| Shuffle Options | Each person sees the options in a different order. | You want to reduce the influence of the first option in the list. |
| Set Correct Answer | The poll becomes a quiz with an answer marked as correct. | You are testing knowledge rather than collecting opinions. |

A multiple-answer poll uses the Allow Multiple Answers setting. Someone could select both channel settings and working with bots, for example. A quiz uses Set Correct Answer, with the creator choosing the correct option in advance. If multiple answers are allowed, a quiz can have more than one correct option.

Groups also have **Allow Adding Options**, which lets participants suggest new answers after the poll has been sent. This is separate from editing the original question.

**Limit Duration** sets when voting ends. Results can also be hidden until the poll closes, so participants do not base their choices on other people’s votes.

Channels offer additional participation rules. **Restrict to Subscribers** allows votes from people who joined at least 24 hours before the poll was posted and are still subscribed. **Limit by Country** uses the country associated with a person’s phone number, not their current location. You can leave these restrictions off for a simple poll about article topics.

## View and understand poll results

In a regular poll, participants see the results after voting: the percentage for each answer and the total number of voters. The creator can view results without voting. If results are set to appear only after the poll closes, participants must wait until voting ends.

The percentages refer to people who voted, not all subscribers or message views. For example, if 20 people respond and 12 choose working with bots, that option gets 60%. Even if 500 people viewed the post, this does not mean 60% of those viewers chose bots.

With multiple answers, one person can count towards several options, so the percentages can add up to more than 100%. If seven of ten voters choose channel settings and six choose working with bots, the results are 70% and 60%: some people are interested in both topics.

## Frequently asked questions

**How do I make a Telegram poll non-anonymous?**

In a group, the Show Who Voted switch controls this when you create the poll. Turning it on displays voters’ names beside their chosen options. Built-in channel polls are anonymous. The settings are compared in the [table above](<https://go-to-chat.com/articles/how-to-create-a-poll-in-telegram/#poll-settings>).

**Can an admin see who voted in an anonymous poll?**

An anonymous poll does not give an admin a list of people beside their chosen answers. It provides overall results. If you need to know each participant’s choice, use a group poll with voter visibility enabled.

**Can I change my answer in a Telegram poll?**

Yes, if the creator enabled Allow Revoting and the poll is still open. You cannot change your answer if revoting is disabled or voting has ended.

**Can I edit a Telegram poll after sending it?**

You cannot change the question with the usual message editing command. If it contains a mistake, create a corrected poll and explain which one people should vote in. If a group poll allows participants to add options, they can suggest new answers, but this does not change the original question.

**Why is Poll missing from the menu?**

This method requires a group or channel. Group permissions must allow polls, and you need publishing rights in a channel. The option is not available in a regular one-to-one chat. See [Before you create a poll](<https://go-to-chat.com/articles/how-to-create-a-poll-in-telegram/#prepare>) for the requirements.

**Why can’t I vote in a poll?**

The poll may have ended. Channel polls can also restrict voting by country or subscription date: when Restrict to Subscribers is enabled, joining just before voting is not enough. See [poll settings](<https://go-to-chat.com/articles/how-to-create-a-poll-in-telegram/#poll-settings>) for the conditions.

**What happens when a poll is stopped?**

Telegram stops accepting new votes and changes to existing answers. The message with the question and its results stays in the chat.
